Five ways to practice the descriptive letter

As a writing teacher, you probably feel that your mantra "show is not talking!"

To get students to describe, write descriptors is a real challenge. Here are five types of papering and prompts to try it.

1. Understand what you mean with the physical writing? (and can you find it?)

Here is a mentor text.

Give your students a few texts that illustrate this.

Great examples are not hard to find; The opening scenes of a dystopia novel or historical fiction text can offer you great examples - and you only need one or two paragraphs.

Drive the mentor text with your students, locate and comment the descriptive writing. I'm trying to focus on sensory words and lively verbs.

You can submit an anchor diagram while you go or just have students who create their own observation notes when analyzing the text.

, but do not stop!

Put your students to work to find their own examples of mentor texts that do not tell.

You do not have to go further than your classroom library or your independent read texts. Use your sentences to create a class poster of "sentences, display".

You can also create a "sentence collector page" in your notebooks to accommodate most popular sentences. (As a lateral note is a great opportunity to strengthen the use of quotations and quote sources!)

2. Well, let's make a descriptive letter! Let's start with verbs!

If your students have some examples, give them the opportunity to practice.

Try:

One of the simplest challenges is to ask the students to write a descriptive paragraph (each topic - soccer practice, lunch, their locker) and no verbs from "to be". Or - restrict them to one or two percent per paragraph.

The focus of this activity:

The goal is to help students try to try different verbs.

3. Use the five senses / five sentences

In this challenge, students are asked to write a five sentence description with another sense in each sentence.

Try:

Students have a five sentence description - (their right shoe, backpack, textbook, top of the desk, etc.). When the paragraph is complete, revise your writing, so that each sentence uses another senses.

Now, this task is interesting:

Taste! You do not want your students lick the tips of their desks! By writing "The Goldene, Honey Woods, however, sunlight flows," but has a feeling of taste - honey, right?

You can "taste" as well as "see" in your head while you read. Use this feeling as an opportunity to reflect the students in different ways of word choice.

The focus of this writing activity:

Students have to think about their choice to use all five senses.

4. Gross me out!

One of my favorite exercises while trying to help students "show not tell", is to challenge them to write a rough description. The most popular description wins!

I have many restrictions on this including:

  • has to be a real event
  • must be words long - not anymore!
  • can not enclose anyone in our school

  • If it is a real event, students are less likely to write about zombies or TV horror shows. I want you to write about your own experiences.
  • a 100 word word description is a challenge! Every word is important.By limiting the word count, I force the students to carefully cook every word - if there is nothing to the party, it has to be cut!
  • and limiting restrictions that can be recorded, avoid potential drama.

The focus of this activity:

If your students can do you rough, write them! You must use all your writing skills to create an experience for the reader.

How will you do it? By description.

5. Take me there - descriptions I can see!

A funny descriptive writing activity is to ask the students to introduce a picture of a resort (or to provide them).

Day 1: Have you writing the students a descriptive paragraph for their pictures. Encourage them to make them so descriptive that readers can see the picture in their heads.

Collect the writing and pictures.

Day 2: Hang the pictures in the room. Let the students work together with a partner. Provide each pair of two descriptive paragraphs written the day before. Leave the students with the description with what they believe is to read the right picture. Allow students to include descriptions among the pictures. If there are more than one paragraph, which the students think they belong to the picture, let it allow to be glued under the image.

Analyze: Which pictures and descriptions were correctly matched? Why? How does the writer lack the picture in the head of the reader?

Notes about this task:

  • It works well if you teach two sections of the same class. You can swap the pictures so that students read and analyze pictures and write them from the other class.
  • focus on the effective letter that is effective. No negative answers allowed!
  • Use numbers or letters instead of student names to adapt the photo and writing.

Students help to write written, is a big challenge! You will remind of doing this on a bulging exercise, however, will forget to apply this ability to your next write task! Consistent practice helps. By repeating one of these activities throughout the school year, you will enhance your "show" skills.
